Hillman Live Cell Imaging Facility

The Hillman Live Cell Imaging Facility provides a unique methodology and instrumentation that allows the study of the DNA damage response in live cells in 3D and in real time.  This state-of-the-art system couples an IX81/FV-1000 Olympus filter-based confocal microscopy system for high resolution imaging analysis with a 50 mW, 405 nM damage-inducing laser, which can induce DNA damage restricted to one cell nucleus within a width of less than 1 μm.

The system induces localized oxidative DNA damage including DNA base modifications, DNA single-strand breaks, and double-strand breaks within a single cell.  This capability is unique in comparison to other confocal laser microscopy systems, and is particularly valuable for probing how target proteins respond to DNA damage.
